For the first Health Tip for 2009, we have a HUGE Issue with lots of exciting information:
This past Saturday we held our “First Saturday of the Month, How to Eliminate Sickness, seminar for 2009 and it was a great one, and well attended even though there was a dense fog that did not lift until after the seminar began. Folks were here from eleven states: Texas, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee to the south and west; Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Virginia, to the north, along with folks from across North Carolina. There was also a lady here from Scotland. Our next How to Eliminate Sickness seminar is scheduled for February 7, 2009.
The testimonies were, as always, “spectacular”, as person after person told how after adopting The Hallelujah Diet® they had seen all manner of physical problems disappear – from cancers to diabetes – and weight losses up to 150 pounds. One pastor from Florida told how his congregation has lost over 1,200 pounds collectively after a high percentage of them adopted The Hallelujah Diet following my seminar there in January 2008.
And our new for 2009 “Where do I Go From Here” presentation that followed the seminar, overflowed our Culinary Academy room with nearly 50 people. This presentation gives people inspired by the information received at the seminar the “How To” apply that information. This class promises to grow as folks learn about it.
In Section (3) you will find an article telling of the dangers of cholesterol lowering drugs, along with information telling how to control cholesterol without those drugs. This is an article you will definitely want to read and forward to friends and loved ones, and if you are on statin drugs, you may want to share this information with your doctor.
In Section (4) I share some of the many letters I received in response to last week’s Health Tip article titled: “Oh for the Good Ole Days.” Some appreciated the article while others did not. I believe you will find the responses interesting. Also in this section I add a few remarks of my own, along with some quotes from our Founding Fathers and others. Some very interesting reading here!
Finally, just before this week’s Recipe for Life in Section (6), in the feature article In Section (5), you will find an article I have written titled: How to Make 2009 the Healthiest Year of Your Life. If you are interested in your own health and the health of your family, this is must reading, and an article you will want to share with others you know and love.

(3) How Dangerous Are Cholesterol Lowering Drugs (Statins)?
The following excerpts were taken from the November 2008 issue of Dr. Mercola’s publication “Take Control Monthly Health Guide,” available by subscription only from www.mercola.com:
“Statins – a class of drugs used to lower your cholesterol – are among the most commonly prescribed medications in the world. I’ve long maintained that statins are one of the most unnecessary drugs there is, and I’m not about to change my mind anytime soon. The list of studies documenting their dangers to your health just keeps getting longer . . .
“Statins have been known to cause muscle pain and weakness, but no one knew exactly why. More recent studies, however have shed light on this mystery . . . These findings add valuable talking points to your arsenal when discussing your need for a statin drug with your doctor. . .
“Other serious and potentially life threatening side effects include, but are not limited to: An increase in cancer risk; Immune suppression; Potential increase in liver enzymes, so patients must be monitored for abnormal liver function.
WHAT YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT CHOLESTEROL
“Statin Drugs work by preventing the formation of cholesterol, and reducing LDL cholesterol, which is considered the ‘bad’ cholesterol. There is no argument that these drugs are effective at lowering your cholesterol levels. However they in no way, shape or form, treat the CAUSE of your problem.
“In order to understand why you don’t need them to manage your cholesterol levels, you first need to understand that there is no such thing as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ cholesterol. Both HDL and LDL cholesterol perform vital functions in your body, which is why it’s actually dangerous to bring your LDL levels down too low.
“HDL (high density lipoprotein) and LDL (low density lipoprotein) are actually proteins that transport the cholesterol to and from your tissues. Cholesterol in turn is the precursor to steroid hormones. (For example you can’t make testosterone or estrogen, cortisol, DHEA or pregnenolone, or a multitude of other steroid hormones that are necessary for health, without cholesterol.)
“Even more importantly, you can’t make new cell membranes without cholesterol. So the major reasons your body makes cholesterol in the first place, and why you have LDL, is to take the cholesterol to the tissue so you can make new cells or repair old damaged ones.
FACTS ABOUT “BAD CHOLESTEROL” EVEN YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT KNOW
“The only reason why LDL could be considered ‘bad’ at all is because there are different sizes of LDL particles, and it’s the LDL particle size that is relevant. Small particles can easily get stuck and cause inflammation, which leads to damage and the buildup of scar tissue, also known as arterial plaque. Unfortunately, most people don’t hear about that part.
“And, naturally, the drug companies don’t want you to know that part of the science because it would severely limit the number of people going on cholesterol-lowering drugs, since statins do not modulate the size of the particles. . .
HOW TO NORMALIZE YOUR CHOLESTEROL WITHOUT DRUGS
“The only way to make sure your LDL particles are large enough to not get stuck and cause inflammation and damage is through diet. . .
“If you eat properly - which is really the only known good way to regulate LDL particle size – then it does the right thing; it takes the cholesterol to your tissues, the HDL takes it back to your liver, and nothing gets stuck causing damage. . .
“Just about every person . . . can normalize their cholesterol levels . . . [by] modifying eating habits . . . eliminating sugar and [refined] grains . . . take omega-3 fatty acids . . . exercise regularly.”
EDITORS NOTE: Sounds like Dr. Mercola is prescribing The Hallelujah Diet and Lifestyle. I have personally been on The Hallelujah Diet, a pure vegan diet patterned after God’s Genesis 1:29 diet for 33 years. I do not now, nor have I ever taken a statin drug, and yet my cholesterol levels to this day remains in normal range. Isn’t it interesting, that the more we learn, the more we realize God had it right from the very beginning! Sadly, most people, even good Christians, prefer to eat the World’s Diet rather than God’s Diet. The World’s Diet produces sickness, God’s diet produces health!

(5) How To Make 2009 The Healthiest Year Of Your Life
When I was a boy, Herb and Ed were my very best friends. We lived in the same neighborhood, went to the same schools all the way from kindergarten through high school, and played together after school. We went to Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts together, went to the same church, and were in the same youth groups. We were also almost the same ages – Herb was born in late December 1933, Ed on January 1, 1934, and I on February 12, 1934.
We all three married, moved away, and went our separate ways. Sadly, other than for some early on contacts, and then Christmas card contacts through the years, we had very little other communication with one another. When I received Christmas cards from both Herb and Ed for Christmas 2008, I had a longing to hear their voices, and so decided to give both a call.
Now it is important to note that it had been some 50 years since we talked to one another, as our only communication through the years had been limited to Christmas cards and brief notes. In other words, we were all around 25 years old the last time we had any personal one-on-one contact. So when I called these guys this past week, we had 50 years of catching up to do.
Now when you haven’t seen another person for some 50 years, you tend to remember them as you last saw them. In other words, you don’t think about their current age or what their current physical state might be. So in my mind I still saw them as healthy individuals in their 20’s, and this is where I had a terrible shock:
In talking to them, I learned that Herb had had 5 heart by-passes and has had to severely limit his physical activities, while Ed had experienced a heart attack, received a number of stents, was on Coumadin, and was also limited in his physical abilities. These conversations, as we talked about our current physical conditions, gave me opportunity to share that I had cancer in 1976. But here is the reason for my sharing what you have read thus far:
BOTH HERB AND ED WENT THE DOCTOR ROUTE WITH THEIR VARIOUS PHYSICAL PROBLEMS, WHILE I HAD REFUSED ALL MEDICAL MODALITIES.
Now let’s think about this for a minute. All three of us were almost identical in age, lived in the same neighborhood, went to the same schools and church, and ate the same Standard American Diet (SAD) diet. I’ll bet some of you have an idea of where this article is headed, and you are no doubt correct.
On the same SAD diet we had each as we had gotten older experienced physical breakdown. Herb and Ed heart problems, and I cancer. When Herb and Ed experienced their physical problems, they sought doctor care for their physical problems, accepted the doctor’s drugs, and went under the doctor’s knife. I on the other hand, refused the doctors and their drugs, as well as surgery for my cancer, and at the advice of Evangelist Lester Roloff simply changed what I ate.
So here we are today, all three of us are at the age of 75 (My 75th birthday will be February 12, 2009). Herb and Ed are still going to doctors, still being treated with drugs for circulation and heart problems, with a restricted lifestyle. I on the other hand, at the same age, am in excellent health to the best of my knowledge, even though I experienced cancer in 1976 and a hemorrhagic stroke in 1991. (My stroke was not diet related, but rather the result of stress following a speaking tour in South Africa, where I delivering 7 seminars, and was in the air 53 hours, during just an 8 day period.)
DOES WHAT WE EAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
All three of us, Herb, Ed, and myself are Caucasian and of European decent, and should have a similar gene pool. So what other variable can explain the difference in our physical bodies, abilities, and health at age 75? For me at least, it doesn’t take a lot of searching or a rocket scientist to find the answer.
After experiencing cancer in 1976, I changed what I ate from the SAD diet of this old world, to what I call God’s Diet, the diet God gave Adam and Eve in Genesis 1:29. This was the diet God had designed for the physical body He had created, and who would know better what the proper diet for mankind was than the creator of that body. Did what we each ate following our physical problems make a difference in our future health? Absolutely! That should be very evident!
Herb and Ed are still being treated by doctors and with their drugs, drugs they have been told they will have to take for the rest of their lives, and they each require regular trips to the doctor for check up’s and evaluation of their deteriorating conditions. While I on the other hand, am experiencing excellent health.
So let’s talk about WHY a changed diet and lifestyle makes such a difference, and I will begin by quoting a verse of Scripture found in Ecclesiastes 12:1: “Remember NOW thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them.”
Many of you reading this, have physical problems, physical problems you may have suffered with for years. You have probably been to the doctor for some of these problems, and even take drugs for them – and yet these physical problems persist. Maybe you suffer from high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or high triglycerides. Maybe it’s arthritis, diabetes, or constipation. Maybe you are carrying excess weight, or have been experiencing fatigue, mental fog, or a host of other problems.
Do you realize that every one of these listed problems and most of the other problems people suffer with that are not listed, are simply diet and lifestyle related and can usually very simply and usually quite quickly be eliminated through a simple diet and lifestyle change? I PERSONALLY MADE THIS DIET CHANGE IN 1976
I personally made this diet and lifestyle change in 1976, at the age of 42, after being told I had colon cancer. Following that diet change, not only did my cancer go away, but so did every other physical problem I was experiencing at the time.
Well, here we are 33 years later, and in just a few days I will celebrate my 75th birthday with a full head of hair; eyes that no longer require glasses in order to see clearly; a lean muscular body with a 32” waist; and so much energy I don’t know what to do with it all. I had complete blood work done last year (over 60 blood profiles) with every profile but two in the normal range and those two were within 2 points of normal. My PSA was 0.79 (0-4 is considered normal).
I am now in my mid-70’s, experiencing excellent health, and haven’t got an ache or pain in my body, with probably more energy, stamina, and endurance than I had as a 25 year old – which was about the age I was the last time I saw Herb and Ed. How can this be? Is it because God chose to shine down on me good health, or could there be another reason? Too many Christians look to God or the medical doctor for their health and well being, when they need to be looking somewhere else.
Sadly, I look at people, some less than half my age, and they are already sick and tired, dragging through life, taking numerous doctor prescribed and over the counter drugs, and can’t understand why God doesn’t answer their prayers for healing.
My friend, it is not God’s fault you are suffering with these various physical problems! Most Christians today are looking to someone or something outside themselves – God, doctors, drugs, etc., as the source for removing their physical problems. But if we are going to get rid of these physical problems, we must stop looking outside ourselves, and start looking inward. Yes, I said inward!
SICKNESS IS ALMOST ALWAYS A MATTER OF CHOICE
Almost every physical problem being experienced today is caused by what people place into their mouth and their failure to exercise! If we want to be well, we must each realize that our health depends on us, (not on God, the doctor, drugs, radiation, or surgery) and that the daily diet and lifestyle choices we make are what determines whether we live in sickness or in health.
The Bible puts it this way in Galatians 6:7: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man (or woman) soweth, that shall he (or she) also reap.”
Sickness is merely the result of sowing and reaping! For instance, how sad it is that people do not realize that every time they consume a food containing refined sugar, they are weakening their immune system a little further. Each serving of sugar causes it to malfunction a little more, resulting in their immune system being less and less capable of protect them from germs, viruses, and bad bacteria.
White flour products are devoid of both nutrition and fiber! Thus, when we consume a product comprised of white flour, not only are we not receiving anything of nutritional value to nourish the beautifully physical body God provided each of us, but we are also placing into our body a fiberless substance that causes constipation, along with other physical breakdown. Most of the people of today are consuming an almost fiberless diet, as there is no fiber to be found in anything of animal origin, or in white flour, sugar, or table salt, the substances most people consume daily.
Nor do most people realize that the animal source foods they consume daily – both of flesh, egg, and dairy origin, are the primary cause of heart attacks, congestive heart failure, strokes, most cancers, colon and digestive problems, diabetes, osteoporosis, heartburn, acid stomach, and more. There is nothing more dangerous a person can consume than animal source foods. It was for this reason and with this knowledge, that 33 years ago I stopped consuming anything that came from an animal.
WHAT CAN A PERSON EAT?
Believe it or not, there are as many tasty dishes and tasty treats available that are healthy, and that produce and protect health, as there are unhealthy ones. It is just that we have been programmed in the society in which we live to eat the unhealthy foods, the foods that cause our body to malfunction and produce all manner of disease along with physical and mental breakdown. God told us the foods He designed our bodies to be nourished with in Genesis 1:29, immediately after creating that first man and woman, and placing them in a garden.
If you are fortunate enough to have reached your current age, without suffering physical problems or physical break down, may I encourage you to “Remember NOW thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them:” (Ecclesiastes 12:1)
But if you have already been visited by physical breakdown and various physical ailments, and want to get off that road of sickness and suffering, doctor visits and drugs, I am thrilled to be able to share with you another way, a better way, than the way you have been previously traveling. Listen as God tells us about that better way:
“Bless the Lord, o my soul: and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, o my soul, and forget not all His benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with loving kindness and tender mercies; who satisfieth thy mouth with good things so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:1-5)
In 1976, at the age of 42, I chose to allow God to “satisfy my mouth with good things”. Yes, I chose to satisfy my mouth with the very foods God told us we should eat in Genesis 1:29. Within a year of satisfying my mouth with “good things”, the foods coming from God’s garden, my cancer was gone, and here I am 33 years later, in my mid-70’s, still experiencing my “youth”!
Won’t you join me by making 2009 the healthiest year of your life? How about considering allowing God to “[satisfy] your mouth with good things so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” IT IS MY PRAYER THAT YOU WILL!
As we enter the New Year 2009, may I encourage you to start the New Year right by adopting a healthy diet and lifestyle? Don’t you think it is time to give The Hallelujah Acres Diet and Lifestyle a try? And before you answer that question, how about taking stock of your physical and mental health and all the problems that old Standard American Diet (SAD) you have been eating has brought you? In fact, right now, why not take out a piece of paper and list all the physical symptoms you are currently suffering with – no fudging!
List every one of them! Do you ever experience a cold, the flu, headache, sore throat, upset stomach, constipation, or pimples? Do you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or high triglycerides? Do you suffer with fatigue, mental fog, arthritis, diabetes, acid stomach or heartburn? Are you taking medications for anything? Wouldn’t you like to get rid of all those physical problems and medications?
You can improve your health, if you are willing to take the challenge, and make 2009 The Healthiest Year of Your Life. If you are willing to take that challenge, will you share that decision with me? (6) Recipes for Life: Gayle's Sweet Potato Casserole ***
“Hi Dr. Malkmus, I hope you had a very Merry Christmas! We had the snowiest Christmas on record here in Oregon. My daughter-in-law’s parents were the only ones able to get to our house for the Christmas feast and so they had a Hallelujah Christmas Dinner, because family members who were bringing the standard holiday fare were not able to make it because of the snow. But the in-laws were good sports, ate it all, and apparently enjoyed it. Hallelujah! Here is a recipe we enjoy:”
4-5 large sweet potatoes (baked, cooled, and peeled)
2 cups almond milk
1 cup maple syrup
3 tablespoons whole wheat flour
1/2 teaspoon Celtic Sea Salt
Slice potatoes into 1/2 inch slices. Oil a 9 inch baking dish. Layer sweet potato slices into dish. In a bowl, whisk together almond milk, maple syrup, flour, and salt. Pour over potatoes and bake in a 400 degree oven for 35-40 minutes. ENJOY!
